1) "Our privacy delusions" was the first segment that I watched. The most interesting part about this was in the beginning talking about how even though your facebook may be private and secure, in reality it is not completely. I think this is interesting because pretty much all college students have a facebook, and we dont always think about the fact that if we are posting ocomments or picture on our friends' walls, that it is fair game to the whole internet. If people share our stuff and it goes viral, then they are protected under the facebook copyright. People should really think about the fact of even though their facebook is private, it does not mean that everything they share or do on facebook is private as well.
2). "How to sort good information from bad on twitter" was the second segment that I watched. This was about how useful twitter can be to people. I thought it was interesting how the man speaking talked about looking at twitter as a meal. Your main dishes come from official sources such as news stations and radio stations. They can give important information to people that could help them out. The side dishes of twitter could be magazines or journalists. Not all of the information can be accurate. It is important for people to realize that not everything on twitter can be trustworthy. A lot of the information that pops up on my newsfeed I am unsure about. I follow a lot of unofficial people and never know if what they are saying is credible or false.
3) "Facebook's new social search" was the third segment that I watched. This segment is about a brand new search bar that appeared on facebook this month. It is called a social graph search and how it works is by letting facebook users search for people with similar interests as them. I found thi segment kind of scary because I had never even heard of this new search tool, until watching this segment. In the segment, it says that Facebook "quietly"updated their privacy policy so that not one person could entirely avoid people being able to look them up through similar interests. This freaks me out personally, and I think everyone should listen to this segment in order to be aware of what is going on. It seems like there is no point to even have our facebooks on private if they wont be completely private.
4) "Facebook vs. Europe" was the fourth segment that I watched, This segment is about Europe being more strict on privacy laws. I was SHOCKED when Max started to talk about how Europeans are required to give every bit of data collected on someone through facebook to that person if wanted. Max was shocked himself when he was given a stack of 1,200 pages of data and information on him...just through Facebook. He said that he wa snot even an active user of Facebook. This scares me because I post a lot of stuff on Facebook, including hundreds of pictures. If Europe is able to do this, then so could the United States, The United States one day may follow in the same footsteps. It is not okay that Facebook does not delete everything that a person actually wants to delete. They still keep record of every picture that you like, of every message that you send, and even everytime that you poke someone. This is definitely an invasion of privacy.
5) "The little thing called like" is the last segment that I read. This segment is all about how you can "like" every little thing on Facebook. It used to be that you could just "like" peoples pictures and other pages. Now you can "like" it when people add other people as friends, for example. This is interesting because most people on facebook "like" pages of brands and what not, just that it will show up on their interests page. They click this button without being aware of all of the information. When someone "likes" a page, they are signing up to be sent information on that certain page. This is crazy because in a way it is like Facebook is how people advertise all of their products and services. People should be aware of what they are getting themselves into when they press that "like" button.
I thought that the two segments that seemes most related are "Our Privacy Delusions" and "Facebook vs. Europe". These two relate a lot because the first segment is explaing that anyone can see what we post on Facebook, even if our facebooks are private. As long as we post stuff to other people's walls, or tag them in posts, then they are fair game to the world and internet. The second segment relates to the first because it is talking about how facebook will keep every bit of data and activity that you do on there. They even keep stuff that you delete, so nothing fully is erased. Thsi is scary because after listening to these two segments, I feel as if Facebook is not safe for anyone, and it makes people think twice about keeping them

In class blog #10
I am very glad that I decided to take this class as a freshman for many reasons. The biggest reason is because I learned a lot of valuable information that I can apply to more classes and papers in the future. This class has taught me important information on paraphrasing and plagiarism that I can keep with me when I have to cite sources in other classes. I will be writing many more papers in my college career and it is imperative that I learn the basic rules my freshman year. I am also very happy that we went over different sourcesand what they can be used for. Often times, people forget that they can use magazines, newspapers, periodicals, and more as sources in their papers. many students will usually use books and websites just because they are the most common and easily accessible. The annotated bibliography was also helpful because it forced me to research my topic and find many sources before I actually begin the paper it self. I have learned many different tips and rulesto use to make me better at researching and putting together a paper. I think it is a great idea for us to have to present our research in this class because we will have to do that in many of our other classes throughout college, and also once we get into our careers.
I will apply these skills that I have learned to all of my other classes. I will also apply these skills to my career one day. Majority of jobs include employees and workers presenting their information to the rest of their co-workers and it is important that we know how to present our own research or information. I will forever use the CRAP test when taking information from a source. It is a great tip to use for the rest of my life.

I have always been familiar with what an annotated bibliography is because we have talked about it all through grade school and in different classes. After watching the video and looking over the web page I found out more detailed information about the annotated bibliography and learned new things about it. An annotated bibliography is the combination of a bibliography and of an annotation. A bibliography is a list of sources that someone uses while researching a topic. An annotation is a summary. When you combine the two words together, an annotated bibliography is a summary of sources. In this class, Mrs. Pashia is requiring us to write an annotated bibliography because it forces us to do our research early and not wait last minute. This will be good experience for us students, and should also prepare us for our papers and get good grades. This forces us to research as many sources as topic and this will allow us to have a wide range of sources and references in our research papers.

Today in class we had a speaker come in and talk to us about what special collections is and she explained different examples of a special collection to us. Special collections is found usually within a library, and at UWG the special collections can be found on the first floor of the library. Special collections is the department that stores specific items such as, rare books, archives, manuscripts, etc. These items that are in Special collections are usually fragile, and they need to be taken proper care of. We also talked about what a primary source is and then we went around the room and all gave an example of a primary source that we personally have. Primary sources are an original source. For example, my Grandpa died when I was a baby, so I never got the chance to really know him or learn about him. I have a picture of him from the yearI died and I have kept on to it all these years later because it is all I have left of him. This is an example of a primary source. Other examples could be letters written to you from years ago, or old video, or scrapbooks. Special Collections and Primary sources could be helpful in a research project if you are doing a project on your family or if you are trying to find background information. Some questions could be answered such as, "Where did my family come from?" or "What did my Grandpa look like before he died?"

Today in class I searched two different databases. I first went to Galileo and typed in "psycINFO" into the search databases bar. I clicked on that and then typed "gun control' into the search bar. All of the articles had many of the same keywords and subject terms. Each article was about gun laws, firearm regulation, and gun control policies. The second database that I researched was "Social Science Journal (ProQuest). I also typed in "gun control" into this database as well to research. The articles that came up on both databases were kind of different from each other. The first database had more information on safety messages and firearm regulations. The articles from the second database had more information on crimes and the government. When I did the subject filter the results for each database were different. The databases both had a good bit of information under "abstract" but it was different types of information according on the database the articles were from. They are both similar to Academic Search Complete. I would use the databases when I am researching for projects or academic classes. These are especially helpful to use for sources in research papers for this class, or English class. From my experience, I liked the psycINFO database the best.

Homework Feb. 20th
I had never even heard of a filter bubble before I watched the video. I had no idea that our computers were basically being monitored and changed to our personal likes. I do not think that filter bubbles are a good thing what so ever. It is kind of cool how if we type something into Google, that the search results will come up with stuff that is similar to our likes and interests, but that is not neccaserily a good thing. What happens if I am trying to do a project and do not want any biased information? That is hard to find if we have filter bubbles. We would only find information on stuff that we want to see, but for research we need to see the entire spectrum and learn about stuff that we don't exactly want to see or learn about. I do not think that anyone should have filter bubbles because this might also lead to not everyone being aware of important information, etc. I then looked at the list of ten things to pop our filter bubbles, and I think that this is a great article. I was so unaware that Google and Facebook, etc. are able to find out our likes, dislikes, interests, and more just by what we click on. It kind of freaks me out and I will definitely use some of the 10 tips to pop my filter bubble. I did not realize that our web history could also have such a big impact on our search results, so I will definitely be clearing that on a regular basis. This was a really interesting topic to learn about and I am glad we did because I feel that it is important information for everyone to know.

In Class blog post #6
Over the past two weeks during class, we have talked a lot about different sources to use on a research paper and what specific information to look for in each source. One of the sources that we learned about in class was a magazine. In a magazine we would find updated information such as, current updates, interviews between people, and current news articles. Magazines are a popular source because it is a source that gets looked at on a regular basis. There are many academic type magazines and this would be helpful towards answering a specific research question. Most of the information is true and valuable information. A second source we learned about is a newspaper. In Newspapers you would also find important new articles and information going on all over the world. There will be sections covering all types of topics, such as, current events, politics, alerts, etc. Newspapers are considered a scholarly and popular source. They get looked at everyday and there are new ones being printed every single day. A newspaper would be able to help answer a research question, as well. A third source that we talked about is a book. In books you can always find research, background information about a topic, and sometimes interviews, depending on what type of book it is. Books are considered a scholarly source, because they are usually the first source that people will use to research something specific. A book could definitely be used to answer my research question because there are all different kinds of books, and I would be able to get all my information from just books alone. They hit every aspect of my topic. A fourth source would be a website source. This can be a popular or scholarly source, but usually scholarly. They have all kinds of information to find on the inernet. The websites are my favorite sources to use, so I will definitely use them to answer my research question because it covers both points in my paper.

Homework Feb. 13th
My group's topic is: How does the media influence or affect Americans today? This is a very broad topic. I decided to do my individual research question on: Do video games and other media affect youth violence within the United States? This makes our overall research question more specific to one thing, and that is violence. It also is more specific with just children. I think that this is a very interesting topic, and I have already found some good sources to use for it. So far, I have found that video games, innappropriate TV shows, movies, and song lyrics and influence negative violence and thoughts within children. This question can have two different sides to it. Some people will argue that it does not affect violence, while others will absolutely say that it does. I will address both sides of the issue in my paper and will give facts and opinions to both sides as well. This paper will be a more argumentative paper, because these are the two points that I am going to be using in my research paper. I found a good bit of information in my pre-research, therefore my topic does not need revising.

In-Class Blog #5
Although I have only been in this class for less than two months, I feel as if I have already learned so much useful information. The information from this class is not only useful in here, but I can also contribute my new knowledge to my other classes, especially my English class. In English this semester, my class will be working on a research paper in the near future, and this class will prepare me for how to properly cite my cources without accidentally plaqarizing them. I used to be very confused on the difference between paraphrasing and plagarizing, but thanks to this class I now know how to word something correctly. In my English class, we have also begun looking up different sources for our papers, and I now know how to check websites and books to see if they are credible to be used as research for my papers. This class is not only preparing me for how to properly write papers in here, but also how to properly write papers in my other classes. I am still only a freshman and have already begun writing many papers. Papers and research will become a much more common thing in my later years of college. I also plan on going to Grad school, and I will definitely have to know how to right proper and solid papers. There is no way people would get away with citing a source incorrectly in Grad school. I am lucky that the school offers this class to students.

Citation MLA:
Levine, Madeline. Viewing Violence: How media violence affects your child's and adolescent's development. New York; Doubleday, 1996. Print.
This source is all about how different forms of media can affect how children and teenagers for behaviors as they grow up. When teenagers and children see violence being portrayed as something good, it gives them reason to act out in ways that they sometimes do. Not only does the TV affect them, but also video games and music. Although this book is from 1996, it is still credible information because violence was bad during that time, but things have only gotten worse. I would use this book for some of my information, but not for all. I will also find a book that has more recent information, and then compare the two. This source will definitely help contribute to finfing the answer to my research question.

This was not my first time using a library catalog, as Im sure it was not many peoples first time. Throughout Highschool we had to use the schools catalog to look up books for research projects and papers as well. In Highschool, we had librarians that would usually help us find books that we needed, so we were kind of babied when it came to that. Here in the West Georgia Library we have assistants to help us if we cannot find a book, but for the most part we learn to do it on our own here. The library catalog was very easy and simple to use. There are many computers in the library to help us search for a particular book. The black stand with the maps and other papers (by the elevators) is very helpful. It helps me find out exactly what section of the library, or which floor I need to go to in order to find a specific book. I did not have any trouble with searchin for a book here in the Ingram Library. Everything was layed out very well, and the library assistants are very friendly if you need help along the way. The books on the shelves are in exact order and not messed up at all. Everything is very organized and everyone is very helpful. This makes the research go much more smoothly.
Feb. 4th Homework
My group chose to do our research topic on how the media affects crime and negative actions in America today. For my individual research project I am going to research how violent video games/songs/movies being shown and introduced through media can lead to crime. This affects particularly younger teenagers and children. I went to the library catalog and researched "media affects" and then I also researched "media and crime". It came up with a lot of great books, and even some electronic books online. One of the books I found is called ""Viewing Violence: how media violence affects your child and adolescent's development"by Medeline Levine. This book is currently available in the library and the information seems like it is spot on to my research topic. Another good book that came up in my research was called "Constructing Crime: perspectives on making news and social problems" by Gary W. Potter and Victor E. Kappeler. This book would maybe be helpful to my project, but not as specific and relevant as the other book. I would definitely choose the first book I found because my topic relates much more to it. The book that I chose is from 1996, so I would definitely want to get some other information from more updated and newer sources as well. The other book that I did not choose was two years newer (1998), but it did not seem as good.

Research Topic
My group chose to do our research topic on how the media affects and adds to crime in America. Everyday there are different cases and crimes being commited and many of these criminals have gotten ideas from negative and violent TV shows or movies. Influences from deragotory and violent movies are available for anyone to see and and they can influence bad decisions. Each member in our group is going to be responsible for doing a different topic on different crimes that the media blows up. We will each research our topic and put them all together.

Kourtney Jones and I worked really well on this project together. We both met at the library and started right away. We immediately got on the computer together to figure out what all we needed to do in order to complete this project. We picked the book together that we were going to find. We then both walked together to figure out where the book was located in the library. After we found our book, I got on the computer to start creating the power point and adding the steps. Then, Kourtney went back on and added the photos that we took. This was a good experience because we now know for future reference and the steps in order to find exactly what books we are looking for and how to do the research for it.

Homework #2
The first article that I found if about a U.S. Postal worker who goes 44 years without taking a sick day. She is now 64 and she is retiring, but she never took a sick day. Any time she had to miss work she would use one of her vacation days. I think this is a really neat article just because it is very rare to see people being that dedicated to their work in this day and age.
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/postal-worker-retires-44-years-without-sick-day-204326090--abc-news-savings-and-investment.html
This article is about using lungs from a heavy smoker in order to give someone a lung transplant. This is interesting to me because my Grandpa was a very heavy smoker before he died and it's always been something I am curious about. I don't understand how a heavy smoker's lungs would be healthy to give to someone already very sick.
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/01/29/lungs-from-heavy-smokers-may-be-just-as-safe-for-double-lung-transplant/?test=latestnews
The next article is about a body that had been missing for 20 years and has now been found. In 1993, a woman went for a drive and was never found. the case was reopened and there is now much better sonar technology and the woman was found in a canal in Florida. This is cool because even after 20 years, her family can finally have peace with what had happened.

In class blog post
If I were at a party and overheard a group of people in a conversation talking about something that I was interested in, I would definitely want to become a part of that conversation too. I would want to go about it in a way that did not come off as being a "know-it-all" or without being annoying and creepy. I would first go about it, by casually walking by and chiming in by saying something like, "Oh my gosh I know exactly what you mean!" The best way to get in on their conversation would be to agree with something they are saying. To prove that I actually know what I am talking about I would mention how I know what I am talking about. For example, if the conversation was a bout a certain TV show, I would say something like "Oh, I watched that show on Monday on CNN and I loved it!" This would prove where I saw it, which would be the source. It is important to sound knowledgeable, but without coming off as bragging.
On the other hand, if the scene were flipped around and someone else was trying to chime into my conversation I would definitely listen to what they have to say. If everything they say makes sense and lines up, then chances are they really do know what they are talking about. Every person should be allowed to at least express their opinions and what they think they know about the topic. But it is up to us if we want to actually trust them and take them for their word.

RA Interview
For this blog post, I decided to interview my RA on my floor
in Center Pointe Suites. Her name is Tia and she is a junior here at West Georgia.
She said that she is familiar with research papers and has done a good bit
throughout High School and College. I first asked what types of sources her
professors required her to use and she said, “That professors usually allow any
credible source excluding Wikipedia”. She has never been allowed to use Wikipedia
on a research paper and never will. She also used some other well-known sources
such as, Galileo and Noodlebib. I then asked Tia how she found her sources, and
she said “I found my sources using Google, and many times used well-known
sources like, CNN. Less popular websites did not seem as credible or
trustworthy”. She learned to always look at when the website was last updated
and to make sure there is always an author. I then asked Tia if throughout her
college years if her research paper requirements have changed from when she was
in her first semester of college. Tia said, “When I was a freshman the research
paper subjects were much broader and much easier to find more information. As I’ve
gotten into my major, my research paper topics have become much more specific,
which causes me to search more in depth for credible and reliable information”. She had t change her research strategies a
bit because she had to use more sources than just the internet. She also had to
start using more books as sources, as well.

Favorite Research Project
During high school, I did many different types of research projects. My favorite and most interesting research I did was during my senior year and it was for my Senior Project in English class. For my Senior Project I chose to do my project on creating a healthy, children's cookbook. In order to do this project I first had to research the steps in making and putting together and actual cookbook and what all would be needed in it. I found that there were much more steps then I had anticipated on. I found most of my research online and I also lookedat other cookbooks for reference. I had a project facilitator who also walked my through some of the basic steps and guided me through my project. Next, I had to research many different recipes that would appeal tochildren but would also be healthy and nutrious snacks. I decided to make my recipes more specific by involving fruit in each of them. Once I completed all my research and found ten recipes that would work, I began to start on the actual cookbook. I designed and created the cookbook myself. I had to make each recipe and take pictures of myself during the process. So, on each page of the cookbook I had the recipe written out, a picture of me making the recipe, and a picture of the final snack. It was a long and time consuming process but it ended up being a lot of fun. When I was all done with my project I had to write a paper on the process and steps. I also had to present my project to my class and also to a room with three judges. It was very intimidating and scary, but it prepared me for a lot and I ended up getting a lot out of the project while having fun doing it.

Evaluation Criteria: B-Skinny Coffee
I decided to apply the CRAP test evaluation criteria to B-Skinny Coffee. The first thing I did was check for the currency. At the bottom of the page, I found that the copyright was in 2011. So it was less than two years ago. I also found under the clinical references that thiswebsite uses other references from books and websites that are dated much earlier than 2011. Some dates given were before 2000. Some references would be good ones to use, but some could be outdated at this point. The website needs updating on all of its sources before being considered the best website. In this website the information is all about a new coffee that burns fat. It is a product geared torwards only coffee drinkers and maybe people who are overweight. The content of this source is mainly opinion, but it does have some fact. On the main page of the website, there are video clips talking about diet sodas being fattening, but that is off topic of the fat burning coffee. It has poor references. I was unable to find an author for this website. I did find that this product is made exclusively for Boresha International. It is also an official Dr. Ann de Wees Allen product. She must be the sponser. The website did include an address for the company, but there is no phone number available. This website also has many advertisements all over the main page. Overall, I believe that this website is based on mainly opinion, and not as many facts. The creator is definitely trying to sell something to the readers, and it is a product that is not geared torwards every person. I would not consider this website helpful or trustworthy.

Introduction
My name is Jessica Butler. I am from Woodstock, Georgia and went to Etowah High School. I decided to come to UWG because it was the perfect size school and it was a good distance from home without being too far away. My major is Business Management and I want to eventually get into Healthcare Administration. I want to be in the Healthcare field without actually being hands-on. During this class, I hope to learn how to properly research things because I know it will be very helpful throughout my next years here at West Georgia.
